Military Reenacting
Civilian Reenacting
DACWR Forum
There are many different opportunities to portray period characters in the realm of reenactment. Many people use weekend reenactments to "play dress-up" and attend events such as Ladies' Teas, Fashion shows, and of course, The Ball.
After some time, probably all military reenactors build up to a civilian outfit to wear, at first, to the ball. Then, more additions to the wardrobe bring about a period character outfit to visit friends in the evenings, or portray a special identity from history.
Ladies tend to use any excuse to visit the Sutler Row and browse the millinery shops. Men make frequent trips to the sutlers for military gear and garb, then browse the shirts, vests, and hats of the civilian variety.
In camp, often ladies will wear work skirts and keep a tidy camp while the men live out the battles for the spectators. This is more the norm, but many women still find it exciting to dress in men's uniforms for battle on occasion. As well, men don't always go off to battle with the unit. Some portray the company cook, doctor, or wagon master.
Duties around the camp are usually shared among all members, and children are given no exception. There is water and ice to carry to camp, gear to deliver to the forgetful soldier out at drills, and a multitude of tasks for the little one to keep busy.
