1st Iowa Infantry “Governor’s Greys”

Organized: Dubuque, IA April 7, 1859

The 1st Iowa is still an active National Guard unit, most recently in the news in the Cedar River Flood of 2008: Members of the Iowa National Guard's 1st Battalion filled sandbags and provided transportation assistance for residents affected by the flood.

The uniform of the Greys was patterned after the National Guards of New York City, featured grey single-breasted cloth coats with three rows of buttons. Officers' coats had additional gold embroidery and lace. Trousers were grey with a black stripe. The uniform was completed with black felt caps fitted with heavy patent leather visors and the initials "G. G."
